Acting together to establish, maintain and integrate the Teaching Garden into our school community.

With the guidance of Ms. Love and Ms. Fanelli, Mitchell School has been selected as a Cook County Farm Bureau Garden Grant recipient for 2014! As a grantee, Mitchell received $300 plus an additional resource, a local University of Illinois-Extension Master Gardner who will assist in the garden program. The grant promotes wellness activities for our Girls on the Run program and aligns with Mitchell’s Healthy School Initiative for the entire school community.

After receiving the American Heart Association Teaching Garden Grant and Golden Shovel Award in 2013, the Garden Team received congratulatory news from AHA and corporate sponsor AETNA to extend their commitment to Mitchell for 2014. This $1000.00 gift allows the Schoolyard Teaching Garden to thrive for another growing season and promotes hands-on investigations of nutritious fruits and vegetables for Mitchell students.

As for Garden Team needs, we appreciate all kinds of support! Your involvement can be in the form of an ongoing summer stewardship, participation in one time events such as spring planting with students and early summer and fall harvest activities. You can also add your voice to future grant planning. If you have any questions and/or want to get involved drop us an email at [email protected]
